This poem is about a coping mechanism I developed to manage excruciating pain.

My journey with cancer has taught me how to nurture and strengthen my inner warrior so I never give up the fight.

Living minute by minute to conquer excruciating pain.

This journey with cancer has been long and challenging with short reprieves in between. 8 surgeries. 33 sessions of radiation. 5 cycles of chemo where I was hospitalized for 5 days during each cycle. Although I'm cancer free at the moment, the 8th surgery on this stretch of the journey is creating pain like I've never felt before and has been a constant battle for weeks. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

After an 8 inch, cancerous tumor was removed, scar tissue has taken root like a 500 year old oak tree. It's got a grip on my sciatic nerve, squeezing the very life out of my leg. Walking has become a painful chore. The pain, unbearable at times. I haven't had quality sleep for over two weeks. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

My feet and legs are so swollen. From slender, attractive ankles to large cankles over night. An allergic reaction from the newly prescribed medicine. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

Drinking Benadryl, poppin' pills; just trying to get this pain under control. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

I watch the digital numbers on the clock, tick-tock, tick tock, watching and waiting, yet no relief. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

Empty the dishwasher, make a smoothie, trying to distract myself from this pain. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

There's a quote floating on social media by author unknown, "God gives us only what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a Bad Ass." I smile and think, "That's for sure". Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

Think, think, think. What more can I do to get rid of this pain? Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

And then it happens. After living with 360 minutes of pain today, a new thought forms in my mind. Call the Emergency Room nurse from yesterday. So I do. "Hi Brittany. Are there any dangers by adding one more pain pill to the mix and changing the timing on my Benadryl medication from 6 hours to 4 hours?" Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

Brittany says, "Yes, you can take that drug and change the timing on the Benadryl. It will just make you sleepy, so no driving". Like I could drive, ha! Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

I pop that new pill. Wait 20 minutes. A little later, I'll take my next swig of Benadryl. My whole being is filled with hope. Will I finally get relief from this excruciating pain? My anxiety begins to subside. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

And then it happens. The pain is gone. I finally made it to that minute. Hang on. Don't give up. Each minute is a new opportunity for relief from this pain.

Thank you, Siva. It would be really hard if I didn't have the support of so many. I hope to be that support to this who don't have anyone.
