Chapter 1 – The Battle on the Plains of Valhalla

From across lush green valleys and deeply bosomed hills came the sounds of harps and flutes and bells joining together in a cacophony of glorious music. Deep down into the chasms of Valhalla they penetrated bringing forth the dead warriors who abode there shaking their heads as if not believing in the music they were hearing for they had given up earthly delights and now lived in the dark underworld from which there was no return.

Far above the darkness of that terrible place, the pure light of day sparkled on latticed buildings covered with gold. Trellises of gleaming basalt topped rose coloured stone columns, and temples with spiral columns and rounded bronzed cupolas marched across the plains. Granite walls surrounded multi-faceted tiled floors and above all the copper domes bulged upwards and outwards forcing the eye to ascend and traverse immense spaces.

2...Separation

In the days of yore, beings without physical form lived in this magical land. Long before the Sun and Moon and Earth separated, the mission of Hu-man was set forth. Many rounds of time would cover millions of years before the mission would be completed, one of bringing Loving to the earth planet. The Great Spirit Lord instructed the Seven Lords of the Sun of the work that was to be done and thus, in time, the Nine Worlds were formed for each part of the planet belonged to particular Gods who could order the waves, the winds, the earth, the moon and the stars and have them move and change, and yet there was order within all. On the Sun however the Seven Lords’ mission was still set and their Logos was the Word that was with the Great Spirit Lord and was the Great Spirit God, Odin the Great Father.

The Nine Worlds consisted of glaciers and mountains, silent valleys where trees and forest grew lush and dense and bodies of water flecked the land with spume when the winds blew across their surfaces. Each World brought forth its own quality impressed upon it by the Seven Lords. The World of the Salamondo, the Ents whose job was taking care of trees and foliage; Muspel Heim, World of the Fire people empowered to contain the fires started by firebolts from the heavens when the Gods battled in the heavens; Darkalf Heim, World of the Dwarves who dug deep under the earth looking for treasures; Midgard, the World of Humans who populated the earth as it was known at that time; Jotun Heim, the World of Giants and Giantesses constantly vying for power in the mountains and chasms; Alfheim, World of the Elves who practiced white magic, rode on Unicorns and were known for their great beauty; the Valkyrie, Women Warriors who carried the dead to their resting place in Valhalla; Asgard, home of the Aesir gods and goddesses, and Vanaheim, home of the Vanir gods who ruled over mist and soft rain and were peaceful gods.

3...The Nine Worlds

4...Yggdrasil

The great ash Yggdrasil grew through all these lands and was worshipped by those who gazed upon its silvery green leaves and golden trunk and long twining branches that reached up into the heavens. They placed their prayers in tiny, bronzed cases and buried them deep in the soil around Yggdrasil.

Out of one side of this world tree, a multi-coloured bow traced its way across the sky in a huge arc. Colours of red, a vibrant energy full of power and force, orange a continuing flow of energy, yellow bringing forth understanding, brilliant emerald green eschewing healing, azure blue for higher knowing and purple transmuting and changing and all who gazed upon this bow and prayed for the colours to work their magical qualities, knew their prayers would be answered.

5...Odin and the depths of Valhalla

Over all of this ruled Odin who, in His great perfection, created the stillness of the earth and glory of the heavens and built a bridge between the two but only He could traverse this. When the rays of the sun sparked everything into brightness, He would ride his bronze chariot across the sky heralding the day and as the sun dipped in the early hazy evening, the white stallions drawing the chariot would wearily nod their heads to rest and the sky became dark and twinkling stars pierced the velvety blue firmament.

Then Odin would visit the depths of Valhalla and feast with the dead warriors for their bravery in battle was renowned. Through the night they would celebrate, each in turn recounted his own tale of bravery and how he was struck down. Wine flowed and as the golden rays of morning beamed down, the satiated warriors would stumble back to their covered pallets and fall asleep.

6..of Loki....

Many of the Lords of the Nine Kingdoms came too and one such Lord, Loki, grew envious of the power and majesty of Odin and conspired against him influencing with an evil tongue many of the warriors who had formerly loved the Great Father. And so a great battle took place on the plains of Valhalla. Line upon line of warriors, their high plumed helmets shining in the early morning sun, their spears and swords and shields held in mailed covered gauntlets converged to do battle not knowing that Odin had called upon the Valkyrie to be at his side. These great female warriors each one selected for her strength and her wisdom, each one choosing which warriors would die in the upcoming battle. As Odin rode forth accompanied by the Valkyrie, a sense of foreboding swept over the followers of Loki and they knew they were doomed to die. Many of them turned and rode silently off into the hills surrounding the huge plain and were never seen again for in their betrayal of Odin, they had created their own deaths. A tumultuous roar was heard and the hordes fell upon each other, swords striking against steel and wood and human flesh. The Valkyrie phalanx swayed as it thrust forth its spears and the Lokitians’ line gave way in the centre. Men were panting and out of breath and blood spurted everywhere. Sometimes the closely packed ranks slipped as the wounded were replaced but always the backwards and forwards movement of men weakened as exhaustion and fear became more prevalent and the fierce women in their pride and anger choose more and more warriors to take to their final resting place. Odin with his mighty spear, Gugnir, blazing above the battlefield seemed to be everywhere and his terrible eye finally searched out and found Loki. With one relentless turn of wrist Odin sent his spear on its speedy flight and Loki fell with Gugnir’s point through his heart.

Chapter 2 – Thor’s meeting with Odin

The far distant hills were flooded with the colour of blood and the magic birds of Tressium seemed to sink into the waves as they flew over the reddened waters surrounding the plain to be absorbed up into the jaws of the sun. These spirit birds were showing the few remaining warriors on the battlefield the way back to the Nine Kingdoms from where they had travelled. Leading the way was Thor, son of Odin who had denied his own birthright and joined forces with his father’s enemy Loki. Envious of his father’s wisdom, Thor’s ugly intent was to murder him and take over the Kingdoms but Odin learned of his son’s desertion and caught up with him on the high plateau above Valhalla and bid his Valkyrie to bring him to his tents. There in Odin’s glorious surroundings Thor stood, his head bowed but his eyes were filled with murderous intent and around him the electricity of his hatred crackled like burning wires and his aura was filled with molten red and yellow and black colours.

Odin gazed upon his much loved son and his heart was filled with pity for this child of his beautiful consort Jodd but he saw the hatred inside him and knew Thor had to do much and go far before the anger that filled him could be tamed. Still he bade him sit and offered him crystal goblets filled with frothy iced yoghurt, shiny green and black olives and platters of crisped flatbread spread with assortments of cheeses and meats.

‘Eat my son’, he said in softly modulated tones for Odin was not only a warrior King but a patron of poetry and beauty, and he could sway people with his vision of these gifts. Without effort he could place glowing pictures inside minds and make them come alive so others could bask in these beautiful images. So he entranced his son, Thor, who looking up at his Father with tears in his eyes, beseeched him to forgive his trespasses and allow him to return to the place he had always held in his heart. But Odin knew that as soon as Thor returned to the world of reality, his hatred would stir again. He placed another image in Thor’s mind, this time of a King instructing his princely son to make a journey through all the Kingdoms studying the intricate values that royalty needed to govern, to diffuse situations that seemed to be volatile, to assist others in need and at the end of a long, long time, Odin finally gave Thor a little rounded glass mirror. ‘When you gaze at others through this my son, you will know what people are really thinking, not what their words appear to be saying. Of all things, this is the greatest gift I can give you, for through the mirror you will ascertain the hearts of others, not the words they will try and delude you with.’ Then Thor woke up and looking into his Father’s eyes, he agreed to take the journey and so he departed.

Thor's Travels....

For many days and nights, Thor and a small band of warriors travelled across the icy wastes that surrounded the jewelled isle of Asgard. Through deserted patches of purplish land where nothing moved and over which a strange silence hovered. The ground was covered with a whitish mist that seemed to form shapes of men and animals and strange gods and then disappear to re-emerge in other forms. Overhead the lowering sky turned a sickly yellow during the day and at night sat heavily upon the heads of the weary men bearing them into the ground mercilessly. Stopping only to rest for a few moments, their feet and hands frozen with cold and their eyes squinting out of sunken faces, the once proud warriors moved slowly but Thor strode on for his anger fed him mightily and this grew with every step he took. In his hand he held the strongest and most powerful war hammer Mjollnir, and around his waist he wore the girdle of might, Megingjarpa.

The first Kingdom they came to was Jotun Heim, home to Giants and Giantesses who turned from their constant warring against each other and started throwing boulders at the shivering men. Rearing high into the sky, the troll like Giants, their red eyes gleaming used their hammers to break the legs and arms and heads of the miserable men until suddenly one of the Giantess screamed out, ‘Stop! It was she, Grid, who had given Thor the girdle of might, Megingjarpa because she recognized the power and nobility of this man. She held back her fellow giants until the travellers had passed through the cold greyness of this forsaken land.

As the decimated band of travellers journeyed south, the Sun took pity on them and directed his rays to warm their path but this also brought out the Ents of Salamondo and they crept alongside the warriors, hiding in bushes and trees. They were misshapen and their faces still bore the troll like features inherited from their forefathers. Yet they were kindly and soon realized that the weary men needed food and drink if they were to survive the journey. Their leader, Solto, timidly stood and called to Thor, ‘We bear you no harm, we are here to assist you and bring provisions, flasks of mead and platters of baked breads.’ Thor turned and gazed at the Ents. Their skin was rough like bark, their hands and feet gnarled and enlarged with six joints on each, and they had only one eye in the middle of their forehead that never blinked for it had no cover. But the kindliness of these tree people opened the hearts of Thor and his soldiers and they left Salamondo much revived.

Thor's travels...Muspel Heim

Burning fires soon appeared on the horizon as the travellers passed into Muspel Heim, and gazing up into the reddened skies, Thor espied jagged bolts of lightning filling the upper levels and large molten rocks rained down as gods and goddesses battled in the fiery firmament. A loud sizzling was taking place as the Fire People beat out the flames with their swords and spears but because of the magic placed in the rocks by the Seven Lords, the swords lit up with a peculiar luminescence and a faint moisture appeared which dampened the burning fires till nothing remained but a bitter, acrid smell and twirls of blackish smoke.

Thor hurried his men from this gloomy place and they entered into Darkalf Heim, a flat and deserted land filled with strange outcrops of stone and stairwells that led down into the depths of the earth. They followed these winding stairs deeper and deeper until they heard the sound of hammering and singing and came to a place where the walls glinted and shone. Legions of dwarves were merrily yielding pickaxes, digging out jewels and gold that striated the walls in long uneven lines. Quite haphazardly the mounds of treasure grew and grew and then toppled over to form new mounds and as each fell, the dwarves laughed and kept on hammering away. Thor and his men eyed the glittering piles of gems thinking to steal some but the dwarves shook their heads warning the motley group of travellers against such actions. The men sullenly drew back and muttered amongst themselves knowing they could out fight the defenceless dwarves and take as much treasure as they wished but Thor wisely led his warriors away back into the daylight above the ground.

The landscape changed and became one of light filtering through soft, verdant foliage and quiet flowing streams. High in the trees, the dwelling places of the Elvish peoples were strung between branches in colours of misty white and golden hue. Here too dwelled Alfesa, the chief Elf with his family and nobles of Alf Heim. Their homes of inlaid marble were built in circles arranged so that the early morning sunbeams painted the windows with warm, glowing light and the evening moonbeams caressed them with a silvery hue. As Thor and the warriors entered the forest, noble Alf Heimers dressed in flowing white tunics and riding unicorns came up to them asking to know their purpose. Thor told them of his long journey to do the bidding of his Great Father, Odin, and how they had passed through many strange lands some very welcoming and others where they had battled and lost many men. As Thor spoke, he looked through the little mirror his father had given him and was amazed at the beautiful auras around the heads of these Elves and knew their kindliness came from their hearts. For many days and nights they sat with the noble Elves before journeying on for Thor knew that their travels were almost at an end and they must return to Asgard to make peace with Odin, and so they did.

And that is another tale…….
