Time and Love

True love does not diminish with passage of time or the beloved's age.

Time and Love

I thought Time, or say Age, was not a good robber of love,
Its plunder touched our dear ones,
But our love for them remained above,
Until I told my friends, ‘My mother has just passed away!’
They offered their condolences to me and said,
‘We are really so sorry to hear that, but how old was she anyway?’
I replied, ‘She was seventy and five.’
A subtle shade of a smile then crossed their countenances
And with an air of indifference, said they
‘Well, she has lived a full life!’

Thereafter, they talked about their daily chores,
They laughed and rolled,
And had drinks both hot and cold
Only I couldn’t shift my mind away from my mother’s death;
And I wondered within me
How cruel and scornful the world could be
If a man ever lived for a hundred years and more!
They would say, ‘Look! He has hidden himself in the *akond bush,
So he cannot be spotted by the Grim Reaper; and be to his scythe pushed’.

*akond is a kind of bush in Bangladesh that is believed to have medicinal value.
