This is a short poem, about an "ungrateful guest".

Ungrateful Guest

A phone call from the island, “Tara is at the vet
Can you phone Mr. Pennman and then collect my pet?”
Tara is no problem, I've had her stay before
She'll know me by now and won't feel strange – no whining by the door.

I called the vet, got Mr. Bates, who said “she will stay here tonight,”
Please call for her tomorrow, when things should be alight.”
Next day when I collected her, she was very good
She settled down, took her pills, hidden in her food.

A more perfect guest there could not be
Until the day she smelt the sea.
I drove her to Granton when she was well
Tara was going home – and she could tell!

Hugh was there, with another man
Patricia too and Captain Stan.
Goods were unloaded from trailer and car
The island Sanctuary seemed too far.

I opened the car door, out jumped dog and lead
Straight on to the boat midst the animal feed.
Never a thank you, ne'er a farewell
Over excited at going home, I could tell.

Tara never looked backwards, not even to me
Eyes fixed straight ahead, staring far out to sea.
The call of the island was so very strong
Stan started the engine, she'd be home before too long.

I thought, as the boat headed out to sea
Why do these things always happen to me?
Everyone's heard of the artful dodger
Is this a first, my dartful lodger?
