The University of the People, almost from the start, has attracted high-level support, with partnerships or backing from New York University, the Clinton Global Initiative, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the OpenCourseWare Consortium and many others. In August, Microsoft agreed to provide scholarships, mentoring and job opportunities to 1,000 African students who enroll at the University of the People.

Since UoPeople's accreditation in February, the University has been experiencing an exciting growth sprout, growing in leaps and bounds under the able stewardship of its founder- the highly-creative and respected Israeli entrepreneur, named by Fast company as one of the most successful people in business for the year 2009.

Shai Reshef, noted for his simplicity and humility, is smart, as he leads the online education revolution globally, thus creating a lasting legacy in knowledge.

In addition to its steady student body growth, UoPeople has been very fortunate to have distinguished leaders in the education field join its ranks.

Among them is Prof. Barry Dwolatzky, the Director and CEO of the Jo burg Center for Software Engineering, who in November 2013, was the joint winner of the South African IT Personality of the Year Award.

Prof. Dwolatzky has joined the University's Computer Science Board.

Mr. Tom Healy, Fulbright Scholarship Board Chairman, has joined UoPeople as the Director of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Martha J. Kanter, former U.S. Under Secretary of Education, has joined UoPeople's Council of Presidents.

"We are very excited to have these distinguished professionals with us at UoPeople!", a delighted Shai Reshef stated recently.

He added:

"We have also been working on expanding our global reach through various collaborations and partnerships. We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking agreement with the Bayelsa State Government of Nigeria, which embarked upon a partnership with University of the People. This milestone agreement will support Nigerian students towards achieving Bachelor Degrees in Computer Science or Business Administration at UoPeople".

The new agreement, announced at the World Economic Forum on Africa which took place in Nigeria this last May, Shai Reshef noted, has also resulted in great media coverage for the University in Africa.

UoPeople was recently featured in the Nigerian Tribune and Nigeria Spur, and continues to attract media attention globally, even from such leading organizations as the New York Times.

Shai Reshef has discussed UoPeople's vision on education as a featured contributor in the annual McKinsey on Society publication.

Historic celebrations

And following UoPeople's accreditation this past February, the university held its first ever "Friends of UoPeople" event in April, in celebration of this monumental event in the University's short history.

Many distinguished volunteers and supporters attended the event, including President John Sexton (NYU), Mr. Tom Healy (Fulbright), and TED curator Chris Anderson.

Debbie Time and Magda Quiroz, two of UoPeople's prominent students, also joined in the celebration that will be remembered for a long time to come.

"I was truly touched to see so many of the people who helped bring UoPeople to where it is today, all in one room, celebrating our greatest accomplishment to date", an elated Shai Reshef stated emphatically.
