Up the Challengers! Down the Incumbents!

An opinion piece about voting in the upcoming elections.

How we got the right to vote.

We as a people have forgotten how lucky we are to have the power of the vote.
The colonists in America in 1774 didn't have this power. The only thing they did have was an idea. That idea was, "no taxation without representation." The colonists had no say in how they were governed. Particularly, they had absolutely no control over their taxes which were levied by the British Crown and Parliament.
The Tea Act of 1773 undercut the price of tea smuggled into the colonies. It forced the colonists to purchase company tea from the British East India Company, whose warehouses held a massive surplus of tea. Thus, implicitly agreeing to accept Parliament's right of taxation.
This spawned the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773. It was a political protest by the Sons of Liberty against the Tea Act. This led to the American Revolution! With no voting power, the colonists turned to armed conflict against the mightiest empire in the world, the British Empire.

The power of the vote.

Today thanks to the Sons of Liberty we don't have to resort to force of arms. We have the power of the vote.
It is true that with great power comes great responsibility. Just ask Spiderman! We have neglected this responsibility of late. The time has come to reclaim it.
The new political party, coincidentally, is called the "Tea Party." This is not an accident. Basically, its goal is smaller government. The present government has been hijacked by those that we ourselves elected to represent us. The House of Representatives, the Senate and the Presidency are at an all-time low in their trustworthiness by the American people.

Vote for the challengers.

We have to vote smart if this is to change.
So, "Up the Challengers! Down the incumbents!" All incumbents have to go! The smart vote in the upcoming elections would be to not vote for any incumbent candidate. Yes, there are some good incumbent politicians. But they like the bad ones all bear the mark of Cain. They are just not doing enough.
It's too late do anything about the man in the White House. We're stuck with him. Remember, it took two years to get rid of Nixon!
Obama's mantra was "Change." Now we know it was change for the worse. The winds of change are blowing thanks to him. They are no longer blowing in the Democrats favor. But, they are also not blowing so much in favor of the Republicans. This is not an endorsement of the Tea Party either. The winds of change are blowing in favor of the American people. But this time we have to vote smart!
There are no Truman's or Reagan's on the political horizon. Look for challengers who endorsed term limits. One candidate elected for just one term! That goes for the Senate and the House of Representatives. Include the Presidency also! This would put the government's and the future of the country back into the hands of the people.
Your hands!

yes great piece but unfortunately most voters are as ignorant of rightness as the ones up to take power are full of wrongness...

I think you're correct in your assessment. I just wish that more people would take advantage of their power to vote.
