We Owe Few Our Deep Debt of Gratitude

The unsung heroes among us take the weight off our shoulders and act as more than a counterweight to the few who try to make us disoriented and loose our footing. The Creator never fails to sprinkle all types everywhere for us to reflect upon what life is about and our own roles in it.

Positive outshines the Negative

Our world is a tough and rough place – just look at the news headlines! There are few out to create havoc, highlight only the negative side even when the good is overwhelming. They create a pall of gloom to browbeat others. The majority fall victim to such but few just carry on with their work that soon outshines the negativity created. The world definitely owes those who ceaselessly work for our overall betterment and well-being a deep debt of gratitude. The Creator makes sure He sprinkles the good and bad everywhere to keep us alert as to what the reality is about. We may be taken in by the machinations of few who take pleasure in hounding others with negativity, but when we look around we are more than rewarded by those who show us the way that our lives are worth every moment; savor them as they are not repeated. We are like the rose to wither away in outward appearance though the inner beauty can be maintained come what may.

Dying Breed but never Defeated

Whenever I feel defeated, I think of those who battle on despite the insurmountable odds they face. They may not be the rich and successful that the media highlights or our political leaders; mostly they are the stoic common citizens everywhere for whom every moment has a meaning. In fact, they live for others without looking for personal comforts or searching for comfort zones. Everyone knows who they can turn to in trying times to lend a shoulder, to hold their hands. However sadly, I find the world is changing and the old stalwarts are a dying breed as people have no time for others as they are ever in search of a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow – the end justifies the means and matters more than enjoying the journey too! But some are born to help others, and may their tribe increase before it becomes a mad race to nowhere!

Real Heroes among Us

Who are those I am referring to? I would like to classify them:

The undefeated: They squeeze blood out of stone, meaning they give from their hearts by going any distance. We are overburdened with issues but when they step in we feel the load has been lifted off our shoulders. Everything is par for the course for them; a matter of daily routine.

Spread Cheer: They light up when they show up. The atmosphere just changes to positiveness. They seem to have the time only for us! They speak from the heart and mean what they say.

The trustworthy: You can trust them with your life. They go the distance for us to the extent our problem becomes theirs till they are behind us.

Time for others: They seem to have time putting their own lives on hold. They are on top of daily issues that weigh others down.

The Soothing: They change the way we look at daily challenges. They make us accept even the reverses with a smile. Everything is par for the course as life is like that in the end for everyone.

Friend in need: They may be outwardly rough but rise to the occasion to help in times of need.

We all know few like them everywhere. They help those in need as the right way to live a life. They don’t expect any rewards, even a word of thanks. It is their attitude that stands out. Few like them have left an indelible impression encouraging me to emulate them and when I do the rewards are close to ecstasy. Life becomes worth living; our lives are then above pettiness that defines few despite the blessings they enjoy.

Adversity Leaves lasting Impression

I am rather saddened the good and stoic role models seem to be a rather rare breed now. Facing the reality eases our burden straightaway. Then we have to think and act as it is our own problem in the end and no use looking for others to take over our burden. Momentarily we may succeed by shifting the weight off our shoulders, but they revisit soon after in another form. The earlier we own up and face the issues squarely the better will be the overall rewards in life. I recall a Jewish gentleman telling me decades ago how he was able to face any eventuality with equanimity – “I was in Germany during Second World War and every day is heaven thereafter”! Adversities do leave a lasting impression indeed! Just being alive is more than a blessing and then chipping in to add value to show gratitude. There are some who just cannot understand or care where others come from. I try to think and act from others’ point of view but my innate self is never forgotten. I have over the years realized how quickly others can judge our motives and we leave a lasting impression when we rise to the occasion. Short term gains are just that while long term ones leave their imprint in us and reflect in the way we behave. I look every day is a bonus to find real meaning though coexistence. Every moment is precious as life can be snatched from us in a blink.

Thank you Mark for the moderation and star merit. My post was not saving at first and disappeared, so I was worried whether I got the embellishments right - siva

Yes, Siva, one needs only to look at the headlines to see that the media and the party in power dwell on the negatives without even recognizing the positives and goodness all around us.

Yes, also, Wikinut ought to do something about the slow saving function, when it saves at all. It's not nice (putting it politely) to have one's writing and posting go wasted into cyberspace.

Thanks LeRain for your support. Everything is news and has to be reported, but the media gives a negative spin to cast a pall of gloom. I always think - why not be proactive? Also, when we elect someone, allow them to carry out their basic agenda based on which they were elected. That is democracy in action.

I was having an old computer with Internet Explorer and now I have Windows 8.1 and use Chrome, but of late I am not able to save at times. It is worse when it performs a vanishing act; reformatting with pictures et al is done with apprehension whether it will also see the light of the day! I had done a better job for this post during my first attempt till the law of diminishing returns kicked in later! siva

Thanks Carol, there were times when one could just walk in any time of the day to get the help of do-gooders in the community. I feel the main reason is people are more preoccupied now with less time for others.

As long as it is in line with the creative process it should be alright though we have to pause and watch our steps for our own good - siva

I am thankful dear Siva that there is no pit too deep that the love and grace of God cannot go deeper ...and there is no life , however long or short that cannot touch and encourage and build up another ...if they so choose to do so my friend .
May all who cross your path be such people , and may you also be of the ilk that helps and encourages others when the needs arise .
Many blessings to you and yours

Thank you dear Stella for your soothing words as usual.

When someone asked me whether there is life elsewhere, I replied the whole universe is teeming with life. Even our sun supports life and is full of life! That is the beauty of creation.

I have pulled myself up few times by my bootstraps but due to encouragement from others and also looking at them as role models. I remember few who lived for others all their lives and that itself was their reward. I am inspired by their lives all my life - siva

"I am rather saddened the good and stoic role models seem to be a rather rare breed now."

They are all dying out.

They did a drug test of young apprentices here, and five out of five were on ice.

When they did the second round of testing (the first test was random, unannounced), nobody turned up to work that day, they they all took sickies.

The world is being frozen over by the drug use of these young ones who have never had such heroes to follow or emulate.

A sad world we live in now siva.

Thanks for your input Spirited that should make anyone sit up and think of the present state of affairs.

Everyone should find meaning in their lives to keep away from habits that cause doom.

I remember few in my younger days who readily helped others in distress in many ways - in fact, they took over the issues and helped resolve them holding others' hands. They did it as the right way to live within society. Now most are very calculative in their approach; they say in my language - you give a place to stay and they start behaving they own our house. So everyone has to be circumspect when approached for any help. Maybe, that is the price we pay for progress and unlimited greed.

It is high time we delinked wealth as the denominator to judge success - it mostly shows taking advantage of the trusting common citizens! siva

Good article Siva. Very inspiring and one can hardly add anything to it unless it is rational.

Life itself does not disappear and so many of us fail to seize opportunity to take the right step. Maybe it is the times, which we fail to realize, is guiding us all the time.
We must keep our courage at all time.

Thanks Snerfu for the kind words. We can add value till our last moment and we all know some who do so. Former President Abdul Kalam did till his last breath, what an example and inspiration to follow! He was a living role model to all.

Look around us to see how many yearn for our attention, just our acknowledgement, even a smile. We are here to add value in our own way; at least, let us not add to the misery! siva

Dear Siva, you are right on target. Alas, the world today is so different from those days when people cooperated, coexisted and helped each other sincerely and without expecting anything in return. Today as you know people seek you out for their own ends, being selfish and insincere. How this situation is going to change, I don't know!

I like to lie low but ever alert to help those in need but I should do much more! Frankly, there is another reason for my lifestyle - evading the vultures in our midst!

Well, God can be more proactive than keep us guessing! Is He listening? Some are getting away with murder here! siva
