Weapons of Mass Destruction are Everywhere – Beware!

We need to look at the right place for Weapons of Mass Destruction - within our minds, how we think and act. Let us sow the right seeds to reap peace.

Look no further

A poet wrote - I saw hatred and ill will everywhere and came to the conclusion this life is worthless, but when I searched my heart I realized I am no different from others! When we start blazing a new trail the change in our landscape will be palpable soon, but if we wait for it to happen through others taking the initiative then that will prove only wishful thinking! Powerful countries expect the rest to behave, but have they done a soul search within themselves? Why not set an example and then see the result? Why not cut the umbilical cord with weapons industry exerting such influence on foreign and domestic policies? We sow what we reap is oft repeated but easily overlooked! On closer examination we realize that Weapons of Mass Destruction are everywhere starting from the way we think and act; and they create more havoc than the physical ones! They set the ball rolling.

Our Thinking

What we think we become in the end. It is so much better to progress collectively than in isolation. Though we live as a society we are easily motivated by selfish pursuits. That casts a pall of gloom everywhere and proves highly contagious. I have seen children under pressure cooker atmosphere to outscore others with the joy of learning taken away. Grades are all that matters for the parents (remember tiger mom?). Their innate talents lie dormant as they pursue jobs that are supposed to pay more but hardly stimulate their mind or benefit society. Each becomes a passive weapon of destruction unable to contribute positively. These traits are more common in Asia.

Home

When one is unhappy that translates in the way we behave with others especially with own family members who depend on us and benefit from our happiness and sanity. Our family becomes the victim of our frustrations of what we cannot take out on others. There are limits to how much they can tolerate. We wreck what we build over years and one incident, nay a word, will be enough to undo all the love and affection within families. As for myself, I have succeeded in segregating work and family into watertight compartments! Work is only a means to an end – the family.

Workplace

It can be a tough environment with people of different temperaments having to coexist. Some just cannot stand others! I have been amused by older people taking out on others – tit for tat – to ridiculous extent even after having worked for years in the same department. I am reminded of a husband boasting that he quarreled with his wife just once after having been married to her for umpteen years. Others were in awe of the couple but he quickly clarified to the relief of other couples that the first argument they started on the day they got married was still on-going! I know of cases where suspecting the motives of colleagues create miseries all around – another weapon of mass destruction against happiness and well-being at the workplace!

Politics

This is where the most potent WMDs are unleashed to the detriment of ordinary citizens. Truth and honesty are in short supply when politicians talk without conscience and fair play. They divide people into all permutations and combinations and the citizens are left to elect the best from the worst! And the new leaders turn out to be equally bad or even worse than the previous coterie.

Countries

Hypocrisy is rampant in international dealings. Your enemy is my friend is the refrain among poor neighboring countries. Politicians keep the animosity alive for their selfish ends and the poorest from countries sacrifice their lives killing others who are just like them! And smaller countries are easy prey; used as pawns by major powers that arm all and sundry. They benefit or rather the arms merchants dictate the terms in the end! They are the real Weapon of Mass Destruction – look no further! The culprit is within and no need to look elsewhere!

Sow right Seeds

If we want world peace let us start from within especially the major powers. They should dictate terms through setting an example – bury all past hatred and sow the right seeds for peace. No more proxy wars using others as tools. Peace need not be boring and is worth every moment, cent. The resources wasted through war-mongering can be much better utilized for constructive purposes. When hunger and poverty are rooted out they prove the panacea for peace and inclusiveness. We need to root out the real Weapons of Mass Destruction than go around looking for imaginary ones for starting wars to kill innocents. The real enemies are hardly hunted and in fact they dictate the terms and set the agenda. We need to send a strong message where to look for WMDs - within our minds!

This is all so true dear Siva. But sadly lust, avarice and selfish ambition , plus a whole bagful of other evils vie for domination in the hearts of mankind ....When love is absent from the equation all manner of ills prevail ....There is an unseen battle going on in the heavenly realms for the hearts and minds of every human being ...Good versus evil .Love versus hatred . Blessings or curses .
We must choose ...
God bless you my friend .

Brilliant Siva!!!..."what we build over years and one incident, nay a word, will be enough to undo all the love" ...oh the power of the mind is both fearsome and awesome....Siva there is such much sage wisdom in this article...from the family ripples become the reflection of the family of humanity itself!....

Thanks indeed Delicia for your enduring support and encouragement. Your words come from your kind heart and should touch a wider canvass. I feel the whole of humanity is looking for trouble, and make the present state of affairs worse, while under the pretext of solving issues. We needle others and wake up sleeping dogs though that expression is unfair to our canine friends! I do hope the big powers realize the hypocrisy behind looking for Weapons of Mass Destruction everywhere but in the place they are stored - in our minds! siva

Thanks Mariah. With modern technology it is not easy to fool people like in earlier times. We know what is right and it is time we did it right to benefit all and not spread the cancer of selfishness that will only doom humanity and also take down all others along. Instead of inclusiveness when politics are aimed at benefiting few, it is not democracy and freedom at play - siva

Siva, once again you have written a thoughtful and inspiring article. I agree with your message. I wish I could give you the exact quote but I will try to rephrase it as best I can. Watch your thoughts because your thoughts become words. Watch your words because your words become actions. Watch your actions because your actions become habits.

Thanks Connie for your comments and wise input. We do not realize our faults while busy gong out for others' throats. We need to find a way out of the quagmire. No point in labeling others as enemies when our actions are not above reproach. When our intentions are clear solutions fall in place like a jigsaw puzzle - siva

Let us not take a defeatist approach Madan. Just because wars were taken as par for the course does not mean we cannot alter our approach. We are now living in a global village with technology bringing us closer. The majority suffers for the acts of a selfish and greedy minority. It is time we realized this truth and folly. Democracy and freedom have no meaning when few dictate the war agenda whoever is in power. Wars are no solution and it is becoming clearer by the day - siva

"Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me." That was a line from a hymn I used to sing in church. I loved the song, but hated the feeling of untruth around me. Everyone sang it strongly, but then nothing changed after the service. I believe you have found peace within, and are so much stronger for it!

The world is rife with hypocrisy to the extent even a child becomes aware of it. Our downfall starts from there that we can do nothing about it - just a fact of life! We tell our children about good behavior, but do the adults live by what they preach? I know even the most ardent of believers hate other beliefs and that is repudiating our Creator. I speak the truth, abhor hypocrisy and need I say - I have a cakewalk? Thanks Phyl for being frank and open about your feelings - siva

Dear Siva
So long as we can prevent harmful thoughts from causing havoc to our minds, the question of WMD will never arise. In these times of social strife and intolerance, the spirit of forgiveness will contribute to making the world more harmonious and peaceful.
Great, dear Siva

Thanks dear Subra for your support and wise inputs. For nine out of ten WMD is never an issue but the one out of ten creates havoc and even sets the agenda. They usurp the power from the vast majority - democracy and freedom have to rise above their vice grip - siva
