What do I care?

This is a poem about how we defend our opinions and judgments and how this defensiveness causes others to be defensive in return. The potential for deeper relationship is thereby lost.

Step Aside

What do I care what you say about me
What do I care if you do not agree
Though words do carry energy
I refuse to let them in
If I believe I have not sinned
There is no place for them to stick
I step aside
They pass me by
They miss their mark
Away they fly

Defenses

Opinions come, Opinions go
They are not who you are, I know
If opinions are all you've got
You really are in a terrible spot
Fences must be always up
And layer upon layer of defenses put up
In case an idea that's different from yours
Might enter the mind and it's judgments disrupt
Or a new thought emerge that counters the old
And demands that a newer story be told
But I like the old one, so you say
It's familiar and safe and serves me today
But under the stories is where the truth lies
Judgments and opinions are just a disguise

Armour

A suit made of armour to keep the world out
Ponderous and heavy to carry about
Opinions and judgments are part of the play
They are costumes we wear for our part every day
They cover the essence of you and of me
When we are afraid to connect directly
In the heart that is common to both you and me

Be Kind

So stand tall in your place
And don't say a word
Let the arrows go by as if they weren't heard
They will miss their mark
If you keep this in mind
That fear is behind them
The challenge is always
To the unkind be kind

Yes, Siva, so challenging no to react in kind and realize that bad behavior has fear at the bottom of it.

If I could leave another comment, just love reading this poem. There is so much wisdom here. It is because of the problems with relationships that many people live such unhappy lives. Blessings.

Thank you for wanting to read again Kingwell. I am honoured!
Yes, relationships are the test of a person's state of consciousness I think.
