What's a TEACHER?

In the last month I was join in a good one day seminar program held by the community student of education Innovative Care, Yogyakarta State University, Indonesia and its cooperation’s with the Minister of Education and culture Republic of Indonesia and the UNESCO Representative Team Asia.

Education Issue

That seminar was about “What's a Teacher Teaching”. This page is an outlines of which I have got from that seminar. There is of course a lot of teachers teach without passion, without a love of ideas or a felt concern for students. We think it’s one of the tragedies of our age. Daily, it seems, students are spoon-fed “educational” material, not to satiate their learning hunger but rather to meet the mandates of the state.

Sometimes the directives are explicit. These days practicing teachers and future teachers are told to never touch their students and, at times, to overlook the lives their students lead so as to teach to the test.

Teaching and learning

At other times this neglect seems to be the outcome of simply trying to ‘meet’ the new state standards. Increasingly, and in effect, we are asked to disavow our loves, our love of learning, our passion for teaching, our care and concern for our students so as to meet federal, state, and district requirements. We are being “asked” to dismantle the vocation and profession of teaching.

Teaching and learning are activities that work best when we work through our hearts as well as our heads. Teachers have known that for a long time. It is time for the academy to allow, even invite, the emotions, and more specifically love, into our understanding and practice of teaching.

Thank you very much for your stopping here to read this page. Have great days ahead...! :)

It was many years ago that the poet W B Yeats said that education was not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire.

He was right then and would certainly have been right now, but governments across the world seem to have forgotten that.

It is not what you remember on the day of the test that counts, but the enthusiasm you have for learning and training your mind throughout the rest of your life. I am so grateful for having had an education of the latter kind - that is why I am still reading and writing about things that interest me, 45 years after leaving school!
