Who Is Against Peace?

Peace is precious for a meaningful life and wars bring humongous misery to ordinary people. Each one of us needs to get our acts together to fight tooth and nail for peace before it is too late.

War and Peace

We are not the only species that thirsts for peace yet it proves a mirage, elusive. Every moment more evil seem to happen than the good. It maybe because negative news makes the headline while the good is taken as par for the course – not newsworthy! Our leaders make speeches threatening other countries – maybe, they think that is what we want to hear. But it ends up as the boy who cried wolf – we are always hearing of war, but are we prepared when we face its consequences? How many are justified but we take them as inevitable. It takes only few words to create disharmony but peace is a long drawn-out process. So why not let the sleeping dogs lay than needling old issues to keep them alive, fester forever? I feel our leaders have no clue what the common citizens want – peace over war mongering. If they realize this basic truth, wars will become distant memory. And for the first time, at least in recent history, we stand to reap peace dividends every moment.

Ride on present Reality

We read every day major powers flexing their muscles in a show of strength. Even puny countries whose people do not know where their next meal comes from are not behind threatening their neighbors for one reason or another or for none at all. If only the US, China and Russia got their basic agenda right to back peace, our arms merchants would be out of business! If citizens of the world unite with help of technology to send a clear signal that they want peace and not war, our leaders will get the message – loud and clear! The world is becoming increasingly an oyster with people relocating across countries all the time. Some stay for decades in other countries, like me, and where I stay I belong! I will never work against the country where I make a living. I am sure others feel the same way too.

Overcome Achilles’ heel

So why is this false agenda hoisted on the majority? Can we break the impasse? Yes we can:

Send clear signal: Why our leaders are lost in the theatrics of war mongering to keep them relevant? Let us encourage them to talk of a world where peace reigns and tout the benefits that accrue thereby. Everyone wants to ascend to heaven and certainly cannot aspire to reach there with blood in our hands especially that of fellow human beings! So let us send signals strong and clear that we want peace. We should let go the past. Let it lie interred within past generations – their karma!

Rein in arms merchants: Arms merchants want to keep their factory orders full. So they are happy with wars and internal skirmishes. They light fire everywhere to fill their coffers. They need to change their vocation, career; or, just stay at home to decrease the carnage and destruction they sow!

Every soldier has a family: We read only the statistics and as long as our kith and kin are not involved they remain mere numbers. But soldiers and those killed and maimed are just like us and have families, children too! It is time the real import of this fact hits us like when we are directly involved. And also think of the victorious but having blood in their hands! We are guilty too as part of the whole process though as bystanders!

Highlight aftermath of war: What is the cost of wars? What is the aftermath? What will be the cost in terms of using weapons of mass destruction that kill mostly innocents? Do we wait till after the event, after a peace treaty is signed? Everyone ends up as a loser – no victors after a holocaust.

Benefits of Peace: Peace unites humanity; wars create only endemic division; the choice is simple. So what holds us back? Only the few who misread the yearnings of the majority or out to make a fast buck at the expense of the vast majority. So let us call their bluff! It should be all-out war but for peace! The rest is secondary when we act in the interest of the common citizens who are now deprived and treated as expendable!

Read between the lines

When the world is favouring peace, why not take the vital step? We should tell our leaders to no more pull the wool over our eyes. We all want peace anytime. We need a better future – not an eye for eye to leave the whole world blind to resonate with Gandhi’s words. What are we fighting for anyway? Even wars in the name of democracy and freedom have resulted in mayhem and anarchy with daily killings more than ever before. They are like setting the cat among the pigeons! Look at Egypt, Iraq and Libya. It is no more out of sight is out of mind as we see them happening every day though we take them as mere statistics when they happen not to us!

Reap Peace dividend

It is time of reckoning for humanity now – collective karma that absolves none when we overlook our basic conscience. Enough of the past and it is the present that matter. Send sterling, unmistakable signal now, not after having made more horrendous mistakes of commission and omission. Let us do what is right like when our own lives are at stake! We want peace and bequeath it to future generations when we leave this shore. Then we will deserve a better place later or even if it is the real end it is okay as long as we did what is right.

Is peace so difficult to achieve? The cost of war is humongous and we prove nothing in the end. We kill few among us – mostly the innocent! Recent wars have not benefited the common citizens but only enriched few. It has replaced one vested interest group with another who were biding their time. The poor is worse off like after every war. It is time to move on without wars – we have enough of issues at home for every country to look for more across borders. It may sound simplistic but that is the only way not to dig own graves and make our world inhospitable for others too!

Thank you LoriAnne, I am touched by your encouragement. Let us get the basics right to build a meaningful world around us. Peace is eminently achievable and definitely not a pipe-dream.I feel a shift in consciousness is happening at the ground level and that will be reflected in those that matter. The powerful countries are seeing reason but our leaders are afraid to carry the message to a higher level as they play to the gallery by taking an uncompromising stand. But they will get the message loud and clear, hopefully, earlier than another holocaust! That is where we have to chip in - goad our leaders onward, forward to a destination that we are destined by the Creator. He is imploring us not to miss the bus! siva

That is the real danger, Stella. Some are led to believe they will have their every unfulfilled human fantasies fulfilled in heaven! So they don't mind getting there at the cost of others but leaving them dead here! So we have a real fight in our hands before they run with the spoils. We need food and hope than guns and bombs. Thanks Mariah for such kind words. We are allowing few evil to dictate terms and how we should live. They are everywhere igniting discord and it is up to us to isolate them. Now we have technology and that already makes it clear the majority yearns for peace. It is indeed cruel that few have to die on a daily basis for no fault of theirs - siva

Dear Siva
I think peace is in the mind of all peoples, including those who think that war is the platform for achieving this peace. Scripture in Jeremiah tell us that it is not for man to even direct his own steps, and Christ mentions in Matthew about those who are blind guides: if we follow them we too shall fall into the pit!
It is out of the hands of mere humans! I will take a government, i.e. ruler, who is much more powerful that mere humans. And this event, is not to far in the future!

While we gnaw at the cords of enslavement to strife, little do we know that the same efforts spent imagining an entire new vocabulary for what will be, is best service to humanity. For this wanted and searched for and yearned for state of being is not in our history. We have no real 'taste' for it, it seems dry, without spice or texture. It is minds like yours that will image and imagine, write and re-write the bones of what it will be like. Pioneers of a new and peaceful way of being human. Thank you for this.

Thank you LoriAnne for your uplifting support and encouragement. I am touched that others too here are voicing that it is indeed time for peace to reign than putting out the fires on a daily basis lit by a cantankerous few out to spoil everything that the majority yearns and stands for.

We have depended on our leaders to do what is right but they take us for a ride. If only the major powers cooperated on basic issues like disarmament we would have set the ball rolling. The present ways are plain self-defeating. No one will emerge a winner. To resonate Einstein's words - I do not know with what weapons a Third World War will be fought with, but the Fourth will be by sticks and stones! - siva

Thanks again Loverme for your comment. If human beings have souls others have too. We are more inter-connected than we realize or care to admit. So let us not gloss over others' position and they are fellow travelers going to the destination as we are. When we are dead we are also similar to a dead rat - soul having departed. That is what we like to believe but none has returned with incontrovertible proof! Come to think of it, others are not selfish as we increasingly are and they live the moments and not to deprive others of their livelihood. Maybe, we have to observe and also learn from them! siva

As we all know the world has never truly been at peace at any time, So the question we often ask is whether it is in human nature to be able to live side by side without warring? I feel that we cannot have constant war, but neither can we have permanent peace. Too much of both will bring about our downfall as a species. This is because of the basic instinct in man to fight for survival.

For as long as there are corrupt people, there will be some of them who rise to power. For as long as there are some people who do not put the welfare of their neighbours above their own welfare, peace cannot exist. As long as selfishness exists, lasting world peace cannot exist. The strongest passions and most dangerous weaknesses of man are ambition, avarice, vanity, the love of power and fame which all conspire against peace.

At this moment of history the primary threat is the imbalance between the first, second, and third world countries. This is what is at the core of the various wars and insurgencies occurring around the world.

Our work for peace must begin within the private world in each one of us. To build for man a world without fear, we must be without fear and without instilling fear in others. To build a world of justice, we must be just. Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.
No matter what someone else has done to us, it still matters how we treat people. It matters to our humanity that we treat others according to standards that we recognize as just. Justice is not revenge — it's deciding for a solution that is oriented towards peace, peace being the harder but more human way of reacting to injury. That is the very basis of the idea of peace.
As Joseph Conrad has said “In Under Western eyes”: “Better than a thousand hollow words Is one word that brings peace”.

Congrats Siva on yet another deserving star.

Thank you dear Subra for taking pains to give your detailed take. When peace is yearned by all there is no point in taking up issues of the past to wreak vengeance, but few manipulate the majority to make the wounds fester. Increasingly the futility of wars is getting highlighted with whistle blowers speaking out against false pretenses and assumptions behind wars.

Wars cannot be eliminated but we should rein them in. With use of technology we should expose the warmongers. We have seen enough of the consequences of war - peace treaty is signed and it is soon business as usual except that innocents got sacrificed. Even those who survived and got decorated live a life of hurt and isolation - those they killed were just like them.

The cold war period is over but big powers can be at each other's throats in a jiffy. And even in peace time weapons of mass destruction are being produced and will find their way around the world. It is time we nipped this evil in the bud, cut off the source of supply. Are we waiting for another world war to relearn the lessons? As Einstein said - I do not know with weapons a Third World War will be fought with, but the fourth will be with sticks and stones! siva
