Why Are We Helpless to Bring About Change?

Despite our earnestness to bring about change we hit one road block after another due to the majority getting played out by a small minority with selfish interests. Let us keep the goal of inclusive growth and globalization in mind to march ahead.

Time for Change

We realize our lives could have been much better and we should bring about the change that we yearn for. However, we fall short as positive change seems to elude us; it remains a dream and not reflected in reality. We feel helpless as we do not know how to take concrete steps towards our destination. It is one step forward but inertia and semantics pin us down soon. When everyone wants change for the better, why are we mired in old repetitive ways that lead to nowhere? Our destination is clear but we still lose our way. The benefits from democracy, freedom and progress should percolate to all strata of society – otherwise our collective conscience will not rest in peace and will be reflected in cohesiveness of society. We would have failed not only humanity but also our Creator who has given us so much awareness and skills that we fritter away playing with fire and losing ourselves in selfish pursuit, greed and ego.

Democracy and Freedom – no Panacea

Most countries enjoy freedom and have moved towards democracy. The iron curtain is dismantled decades ago and people enjoy freedom. Cold war is in remission. Even China has stepped out of a dark era. They seem to have the right attitude to never repeat the mistakes that meant lost era of development and millions of loss of lives. Now their leaders are listening to their people and want to keep them happy; otherwise the facade of communism will give place to what they practice - capitalism – don’t forget they are racing ahead in the medal tally of billionaires too! But democratic countries seem to lack purpose and rule of law; all are equal though few pull strings from behind the scene whoever is in power like the arms lobby.

Break free from Set Thinking

Our enemy is old thinking that bogs us down despite the digital age. We are still isolating ourselves into compartments and used as a pawn by wily few to dance to their tunes. We know what is right but the majority is easily divided and few manage to set their agenda. It is time for real progress that leads to inclusive society. Let us clear cobwebs in our thinking and take concrete steps towards our goal. We should use our resources for productive purposes and not for amassing weapons of mass destruction that is like a Damocles’ Sword hanging over heads. As long as our thinking is negative we will never be able to take the right path towards progress.

Technology should unite us

Technology knows no borders. Latest gadgets are released across countries and shipped likewise. Knowledge is available at finger tips and so also is news as they happen. We stay enthralled at the progress we make, but are we using technology for real progress? Are we learning the right lessons or allow few to ride rough shod over the will of the majority? Why we feel the oneness only in passing fads but not in life altering approach so that entire humanity benefits? Now technology is used to subjugate the majority in various ways through eavesdropping and such that drives a wedge among countries.

See Big Picture – Global Village

It is indeed ironic that we amass weapons when people cross country borders in a matter of hours. Air tickets are booked without artificial country borders. Family members are citizens of different countries. Are we not living in a global village? Then why the need for all these cutting edge weapons of mass destruction? The good will not use them so it will be used by the bad, as simple as that! To bring about a change we have to let go our fascination with weapons that are produced to kill en masse.

Find Common Ground

If we spend our time thinking of revenge peace will remain a mirage. What has happened is past and those who were actors have left us. The circumstances were different. Now we are aware that the vast majority yearns for peace. The soldiers on either side of conflicts are from the same background whose families are hoping against hope for their safe return. Let us isolate the evil among us and refuse to listen to their exhortations aimed to benefit them only.

The best way forward is to find common ground than lose ourselves in controversial issues that highlights mostly past hurts. What has happened is past us and we are in no way responsible; just learn the lessons and move on. We should find solace in taking a simple view – who does not make mistakes? Our wily and petty leaders keep highlighting them to arouse our negative emotions to divide us. It is time we turned a new page in wisdom. When we see the positives from embracing common interests and pursuing such goals to benefit all the petty differences will fade away over time. History need not repeat as modern lifestyle has blurred many artificial boundaries of the past. Whatever our beliefs are, we are born, live, die, enjoy and suffer similarly. When simple truths and realities are kept in mind we will ease towards a future of much promise. It is time indeed, not a day too soon – onward, forward we go – humanity with one mission - do or die as one!

Good morning, Siva; thank you very much for a thought provoking and heartfelt page. It begins with one or two; trying desperately to reach out and bridge the differences focusing on the similarities. Using the technology to bridge gaps. I am in Georgia, you are not, yet we communicate each time the other posts something. I have shared this on Twitter as I think it merits it, and that in turn will hopefully get others to think. ~Marilyn

Thank you Marilyn for your kind words of support and sharing on Twitter - I am grateful The message of peace has to get across as the negativeness of past is recalled to divide the majority. Technology has helped us to clear lots of cobwebs and suspicion in our thinking. I have lived in Asia all my life but I meet the world everyday. I should have seen people of every country and faith and they are all same - want to be left alone. Hatred has no place in modern society but few play on our emotions to keep it alive. Time we took the next momentous step - siva

Still you maintain your karma theory in modern ere u must live up to your own words and bring about a change as u say

Thanks Loverme. Karma theory works in many subtle ways - we reap what we sow. Change should be for the better mainly in the way we approach our life and getting out of negativeness that casts a pall of gloom around. Some spread negativeness as a matter of lifestyle, trying to get even by bringing others down. With weapons of mass destruction getting out of hand it is time indeed to take the bull by the horns - it should come easy if we are united and not fall into the trap of the shenanigans. Time to break free - siva

'''why are we mired in old repetitive ways that lead to nowhere?
Funny ...today in the library...
I came across a book on ancient mythology
and there they said...
Shadow =soul
and
ADAM was the first man… God wanted him to have company …and produce more like him...so sex is no sin… in fact it is a must…so out of his rib Eve came …then we did not know at all about
X-Y GENES IN MALES …a rib taken out was then made into two X genes….I 'm quite sure GOD would have been pleased …some human being solved the genes puzzle…
Man==X-Y
Woman=X-X only
so men have both maleness and womanliness about them
Women are delicate some men are also womanly

Thanks for your input Loverme. Men and women are so much alike but quite different too - we will never be able to comprehend fully the subtle nuances in the way we think and how we arrive at conclusions. Maybe, we should ask some males who have womanliness within them! siva

I appreciate your kind words of support, Helen. We fall easy prey when the wily few divide us. We are emotional to fall into a trap and this has been our history. Most are worried about where their next meal is going to come from and what use fighting over issues kept alive and fighting over past hurts that serve only to perpetuate them. I do not know whether recent wars benefited the common folks in those countries - tyrants are replaced by those of similar ilk - siva

Thank you Mariah for your kind words. I feel gratified that we are hitting the right notes and the nuclear deal with Iran should be the first of many steps to defuse the vicious world situation. It is how we approach the issues that determines the outcome. No one wants to lose face individually and especially country-wise. The good will not use weapons of mass destruction, so why are we stockpiling them? Obama has the heart in the right place at least in working towards world peace - siva

Thanks Madan. Now we know almost all yearn for peace but it is a case of slip between the cup and the lip. We can find solutions on give and take basis like in Iran nuclear deal. But approach should not be one side wins and the other ends up with egg on their face - heads I win, tails you lose! With technology dictating our lives and communication let us step out of a dark era of wars - siva

Agreed Vellur, but not impossible. Peace and coexistence should be the common ground to start with. But when leaders try for peace they are termed weak! The opposition will always try to push them over the cliff. That is why they are made to spit fire, but the countries play smack to the arms of arms dealers who have no compunction to supply their wares to all and sundry - siva

As long as we are united for the good of all mankind then we shall stand , dear Siva ... but methinks the line has been set where weapons that can destroy this planet hundreds of times over have been so amassed with the intention on being a deterrant , that all we can do now is pray that no one person ever feels the necessity to press the button that would in turn call for retaliation ....It only takes one to do that despite what the masses might desire ....
God bless you my friend .

Agreed we have crossed the border Stella, but we still have time to retrace. We see the hypocrisy when few amass them and tell others they cannot even think of having them. It is a question of national pride. The only way is disarmament and not subjugation through might - siva

Thanks Michelle. We should isolate the evil who have no conscience. They goad our elected leaders to fight wars as greed blinds them. Why allow a minority to dictate terms? President Obama should be applauded for the nuclear deal with Iran and that is a step in the right direction. Let us not push others into a corner. Technology has made it clear that we are all peace loving people and unity in diversity is the only way forward -siva

Nothing can change until the individual changes, we need to own the change to be the change.

I think Gandhi said something like this once.

Gandhi said it more than once hoping his people to change. But his countrymen continue to repeat "we need change." Only a few believers in "I need to change" have changed for the better. A country with millions doubts a man named Arvind Kejriwal! Pathetic,isn't it?

Thanks for your input, Chalam. When the majority, especially the educated, do not even bother to vote, they then expect the change to fall from heavens! Indians have become cynical and do not believe anyone anymore - siva

Agreed, Spirited. Gandhi said " Be the change you wish to see in the world". People do notice who we are and our approach to life and we tend to attract those of similar ilk into our fold; but also those out to take advantage of us! Gandhi also said "there is everything in our world to meet our needs, but not the greed". I feel the greedy few outmaneuver the majority to have their way. That we should change - siva

Dear Siva
“Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens.” says Epictetus. This saying is so true because we all have the power to give healing to ourselves and to others. All we need to do is to take the time to be aware, use the tools and believe in ourselves and these will lift our spirits and help to bring about change in ourselves and consequently in how we perceive others.
Kudos for another star to add to your long list Siva.

Thank you dear Subra. The majority has good intentions but few set the agenda. They just take advantage of the goodness around. They act as reverse Robin Hood - cheating the poor and finally get played out by others who bide their time to snatch from them. It is time the majority writ ran its course for the benefit of entire humanity - siva

Thanks Ptrikha for your take. Though majority feels comfortable without borders few wily politicians keep the wounds from history festering to divide us. Technology has blurred artificial borders and we should thrive in one world concept that the majority practices though few manage to maintain needless tension. Also arms merchants sell everywhere so they have more than the proverbial ax to grind - siva
