India's women are amongst the most abused and disrespected lot, why?

Why do we disrespect women so much?

In India, millions of women wake up every day thinking what the new day will bring, not in any positive sense.but one full of dread and apprehension. Dread of not knowing what horror their Fathers, brothers or husbands will unleash on them. Sons are brought up with the knowledge that their sisters are inferior, their fathers are always right and their mothers meek associates to their fathers design of life.No questions are to be asked, especially about decisions or actions of the male head of the family. An existence of such levels of suffocation, that it defies belief of those never exposed to it.
Beatings, sexual abuse, rampant discrimination, lack of any respect and total suppression of basic human rights comprise the life of these women. It all starts in the womb. From the time a girl child is conceived, despite the ban on fetal sex determination, her fate becomes the subject of great conjecture and at times results in the inhuman brutality of terminating the fetus. Those that manage to see the light of day grow up as the unwanted member of the family, Barely schooled and hardly tolerated, they are like weeds in a garden. Unwanted, unloved but growing steadily. The boys see their women relatives as subjects of servitude, to be trodden upon at their whims and fancies.
This is largely true for India's villages and many towns. In the metros, the story takes a different hue. Abusive husbands are dime a dozen, women are molested, accosted and raped so frequently in the cities that it defies belief! All because of a perverted society which does not respect its women and the only way these men can assert themselves is by this show of apparent power. Suppressed sexuality in these men break out in the form of some violence or the other.
If Indian society were to look back in history at itself, it will find a more matriarchal society than the one we live in today. Women were respected as elders, were accorded similar rights as the men and violence against women were not half as random as they are today. But how do we get rid of this habit? Women play as big a role as their men, educate their sons as they should be. No discrimination, equal rights and an equal opportunity in life.
A progressive society not only respects its women, it also ensures that women get equal rights in all fields of life, especially in education. It will have to start from our homes, and as a commercial so rightly declares, we have to start with the boys.

The disrespect of women by many men is a part of a more societal subjugation of women and is a symptom of a society that is very sick indeed.

Yes Grant, it does indeed reflect badly on society as a whole, but the bright part is the identification and acceptance of this malaise has already happened. That, hopefully, will lead to positive action at the ground level and improvement of the society as a whole...

Rightly said Aniruddha. Even most of us, who speak in favour of womens liberty, whenever get a chance give stare at their chest, often wink, pass a n unheard comment (sometimes just think) to get them on bed! We as a whole are sexually corrupted.

I come a tribe that the women are the leaders and make all of the of rules when it comes to the children. The husband is the one that has to leave his family and provide for his new wife and her family. Children all get the same educating. My bit mother on the other hand married not into the tribe. I did not live with them for the first 6 years. I found it so hard with my father it had to be his way all of the time, even if he was wrong. So I understand how some men treat women with out any respect. Someone has to break the cycle no matter what the cost! I had to break that from my dad it was not easy either but he got the message.
