Why Writing is Important to Me...

This is basically me telling you why I write. What I am currently writing about.

Writing for My Life...

I am writing for my life because it is what is keeping me alive. I have lost so much time over the past ten years due to a critical illness. I once was a nurse with a Bachelor's Degree in the Science of Nursing. Now I am just a nurse with a degree, who may never be a nurse again.

So, I have returned to my first love. Writing. From the time I began High School, until about the time I turned 33, I wrote (I am now 56). I wrote poetry, short stories, and boy did I journal. But a bad experience with the Michigan Department of Transportation and a lawsuit with them, silenced me. I will submit an article about that one day, but I digress.

So now I am back to writing. Currently, I am writing two different things. I'm not quite sure how to categorize them, but I think one is a childrens' story and the other is a biography. I'd say it was a memoir, but it is not about my life. Instead, it is a book of memories about my son, who took his own life in 2008, for the son he left behind. It is my hope that that book will help him with his grief and provide a balanced view of his father so he can know him better.

The other story is a historical children's story about the Ore Creek area, in Michigan, where I live. It is about two friends that find themselves transported back in time to when the city had just become a village and changed its name. I am unsure yet what time frame I am going to insert them in. I am presently researching the area, its people, and the buildings in the time period from 1832 to 1900. I am sure I will figure it out soon. I just have more reading and research to do. I will write more about the books and my progress, at a later date.

I have just purchased some Journals so that I can start writing by hand again. I am not very good at penmanship, yet. I hope to work out my fine motor control by hand writing my journals. Anyway, I love the feel of the pen in my hand and it helps me to work things out in my head.

When I am not writing, I am volunteering for LACASA. It is an organization that shelters and assists women and children who have been abused, battered, and/or sexually assaulted. Mainly, I have been helping at events but, if I am accepted, in January I will begin training for CASA.

I don't remember, at the moment, what CASA stands for, but I will be a child advocate. Following one child through the court system, meeting them at their foster homes and writing progress reports for the courts. So writing will be an important part of that area of my life a well.

Tomorrow I plan to go to the Brighton Area Historical Society's 'Lyon's Schoolhouse', a historical building left over from the days when one-room schoolhouses were legal in the state. I want to start helping with the archiving of historical materials and photos. I will be killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. I will be volunteering my time for another worthy cause and I will be learning more about the history of the area I am writing about.

With all that being said, I am off to bed! CW

We all have stories to tell - one to get them out for therapeutic effect and then to benefit others.

You have higher goals too - siva

It's really a touching story. It's what I say; writing is a good therapy in the first place. One my publish things or it may not, but writing for a couple of hours everyday helps to keep upbeat and leave worries and sorrows aside for a while. Thanks for sharing!

I write because I like to read and investigate so I always have something to say. It is good to receive the feedback from others.
