Will Life Retain its Meaning, Purpose?

The change in our lifestyles threatens to destroy the very basics that sustained us over generations. We are becoming more selfish and less cohesive society. Time to ponder and sow the right seeds to sustain our journey that has only begun.

Precious Life

Everyone, every species, nay, everything fights for survival – just to get a moment more in this blessed place. No one is in a hurry to depart – okay, there is the few when pushed to the wall taking a premature plunge! We see the hunted in the animal kingdom trying to get away with all their might and the survivors looking on with a sigh of resignation when nature takes its course finally. When we look around and ponder we realize how precious life is. No one wants to give up without a fight. Maybe, the unknown, what lies beyond, makes us to stretch our days here. It could also be an intuition that our best time is here; enjoy the moments as long as one can!

Our urge to extend our stay also means we find meaning to remain here. We are a social being and everyone has someone to depend on; even strangers rise to the occasion to extend their hand of help in times of need. No one knows who will keep us company in our final moments; hold our hands, as our life ebbs away! Even in times of war enemies do not kill wantonly - there have been unbelievable acts of kindness extended. After all, enmity is a state of the mind overcharged with emotion; wars benefit few and create misery all around – there is nothing to celebrate in the end as peace proves a mirage!

March of Times

From time immemorial every species has found meaning to live on even against great odds. Hope is never extinguished even in times of great calamity. Life manages to survive and even thrive. We have come far, progressed through scientific pursuits though they have also proved a double-edged sword – creation and destruction remain opposite side of the same coin! Majority creates but few get emboldened to destroy through powerful weapons. Majority reposes faith and trust on the few leaders but they prove good only in theatrics and to fight among themselves day in and day out. Democracy and freedom do not seem to lead us towards inclusive society and all round progress.

We are making technological progress at a fast clip though we seem to catch at straws to find meaning. We spend more time in lonesome pursuits but less with those who are under our nose! Even while under one roof we live alienated lives starting with watching different TV programs at the same time. We have choices aplenty as we are led away from basics that glued us as a family. Even in traditional family units people have drifted with nothing in common to bind them. One gets a feeling no one needs another as each is able to live independent lives - hi and bye culture that brings insolence and selfishness.

Basics under Strain

Are we on the path to lose meaning in life and move away towards individualism without core family values? When men and women work competitively and hard-pressed for time, is there a pressing reason to start a family? When the children grow without parental guidance, how will they find meaning in their formative years in a world that remains violent? No one is willing to yield any space as give and take is becoming history. Everyone is talking of rights without a corresponding awareness of duties!

When we start to drift only a calamity will drive sense into our minds acting as a shock treatment. When societal values are under attack and none is there to smoothen our rough ride we drift towards anarchy. Life will lose its meaning when the inner core is under attack. Progress should not lead us to selfishness just like wealth should make us more aware of our duties to the less fortunate. We have none to guide us, to drive home the point that we can find meaning only through coexistence and inclusive society. No leader to set an example as they cave in to pressure groups.

Re-evaluate, Find Meaning, than Drift

How can we stay rooted to nurturing life, make it thrive generation after generation? It is only through finding unity in diversity and not lashing out at the first opportunity and taking the differences beyond a point of no return. We need to play meaningful roles in a family – all are equal players. No one has the right to throw their weight around. The more powerful one feels it also behooves us to be humble for the gifts bestowed on us as they can be taken away anytime. We need everyone to play a part and each should be given the space and comfort zone to thrive.

We should take a stance for:

1. Unity through healthy respect for others and not creating enmity.
2. Pursuit of progress collectively through sustainable, inclusive lifestyle
3. Spreading good vibes to nip evil thoughts in the bud.
4. Reducing greed and selfish pursuits.

The gadgets we are enamored of are just tools towards achieving a fulfilling life – and not made to take over our lives to make our lives robotic. If we do not heed the danger signs life will lose its meaning and the joie de vivre. All the efforts of generations before us will prove in vain. We have hardly scratched the surface of unraveling the mysteries of universe - let us not lose our way at the very starting block. We have miles to go, zillions of them. Let us make the journey worth the while and steady by building a firm foundation like our forefathers did with greater sacrifices even as they fought for bare survival. We should not snuff out the sprouting life before it has begun in earnest.

The meaning of life is contained in every little thing that you say or do. You are what you co-create and what you will in your being is what retains the meaning of life around. I truly believe this and the microorganisms around also give life a meaning by turning milk into yoghurt. So in other words, you are what you co-create in your life and being which operates on a boomerang principle.

Thank you Lady Aiyanna for your input. We take it that we are going ahead and is true as per our concept of time. But do we as a society? Individually some do when they find themselves in some rich list as media highlights them! Collectively I am not sure. The yardstick of progress according to me is how we treat the less fortunate and fellow species. For that we need to have awareness and time and the latter is becoming a precious commodity. We are cocooned within own lives. Rare are those who go out of the way as we are running from pillar to post and in busy city lives one has to dodge those glued to their gadgets. Hopefully things will pan out as each generation tends to worry over the future - siva

Our forefathers fought against great odds to even survive But now the younger generation gets a lot on a silver platter. Time to evaluate and ponder what we are sowing so that the future generations reap essentials for a better world. Thank you Madan for your kind words - siva

As always Siva, an excellent and thought provoking write.
There are so many diversions of attention from the basics of family life now, and it is all too easy for us to segregate and become submerged in our individual interests of leisure time, which is sad in that quality time as a family unit tends to be less.
We all fear the unknown and that in itself makes us cling to life and survival at all costs.

Thanks Mariah. We cling to others in times of danger and then drift. We should find a way to find meaning in togetherness than seek out others only in times of utmost need. Sadly nowadays, people use gadgets even to positively avoid those in need! Eventually we become more robotic than human, lose empathy and feel for others. Danger signals are already flashing! siva

Virtually all religions propose a way of life that will lead to salvation, liberation, satisfaction or happiness. There are various scientific, philosophical, theological and spiritual explanations.

So it’s obvious that the meaning and purpose of life isn’t all that easy to figure out. While many people ask themselves at some point during their lives, "What is the purpose or meaning of my life”, they find it hard to come to any specific answer.

A lot depends on our own life experiences and events that generate such questions. It is clear therefore that we are the answer as Joseph Campbell says,” “Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer.”

Thank you dear Subra. We have less time for others as days roll by captivated as we are by glittering gadgets. We may live under the same roof but get estranged by different pursuits and interests. I have seen parents yakking away while their infants are ignored. We are sowing the seeds of unknown species that will prove quite different from us if we do not tone down our excesses - siva

Great post! I believe it has been said Life is Worth Living and I believe this, and this popular Tv show many years ago s still being seen through his videos and have been very popular. His name is Archbishop Fulton Sheen. He is up for canonization and I for one like his programs very much.

Thank you Redrose, I will check it out. When we look away from society, no one will be there when we need others. Gadgets are great but they are just that without human feelings and that will lead to empty, meaningless, lives - siva
