Yahoo Voices is a great place for online writers. Learn the pros and cons of writing for this site.

What is Yahoo Voices?

If you want to expand your horizons as an online writer, you should try Yahoo Voices. More than 600,000 people write for this site. Yahoo Voices is a good site for writers and can give you another forum to write for in addition to Wikinut.
Here you can write about everything from the adventures of your dog to the latest book you read. There's a section on creative writing for the poets and short story writers among us. Yahoo Voices even has an editorial section for anyone who wants to share their opinion online.
Like everything else in life, Yahoo Voices has its pros and cons. I've been writing there since September and believe that the pros outweigh the cons.

The Pros of Yahoo Voices

There are a lot of pluses to writing for Yahoo Voices. You don't have to submit any writing samples; just sign up and start writing. Another positive aspect of this site is there is a wide variety of topics to choose from. You should be able to find a category or two that you can excel in.
One of the things I like the most about this site is its online academy for writers. You can learn everything from how to write better headlines to how to punctuate properly. You can also go back and refer to any section at any time. Just last night, I reviewed the section on promoting content online.
Yahoo Voices offers upfront payments on certain articles it deems to be "evergreens" - articles which will stay relevant for years to come. You can also accept assignments which pay you upfront. Any article which is rewritten from another site such as Wikinut has to be published in the "display only" category. This means the article isn't eligible for upfront payments but will earn money based on page views.
jYahoo articles rank well in terms of search engine optimization. You should be able to find your article listed high up in Google, if you chose the right key words. See writing online
Another plus is the friendly fellow writers I've met there. I have a small community of friends on the site. However, the community isn't as close as the one we share here on Wikinut.

Cons of Yahoo Voices

One of the negatives of writing for Yahoo Voices is the time it takes for your work to be reviewed. Several people who wrote about the Thanksgiving holiday didn't get their content published until well after the holiday had passed. Other writers who shared articles about Christmas saw their articles published just in time for New Year's Eve. You cannot get your article published the same day the way you can here on Wikinut.
Another con about writing for this site is building up an audience. I get more readers on my slowest days here at Wikinut than I do on my busiest days at Yahoo Voices. I'm not sure why this is. Maybe it just takes more time to get established on Yahoo Voices. Maybe there are so many writers that it's easy to get overlooked there.
Another negative aspect about Yahoo Voices is your articles can get rejected if they are not judged to be of sufficient quality. However, this actually may be positive in the sense that a rejected article can help you improve as a writer. For example, an article I wrote about helping autistic children enjoy a merry Christmas was rejected the first time I submitted it. But as the editor pointed out, the article didn't show why I was an expert in the field. I went back and added some paragraphs about the work I've done with autistic children. The article was published the second time around. I learned a valuable lesson and became a better writer because of it.
My opinion is that Yahoo Voices is worth checking out. Why not give it a try?

Hi Connie. I'm registered with Yahoo Voices, but I haven't written anything for them yet.

Jerry, they have a nice section on religion and spirituality. You can even re-publish some of the articles you've done here on Wikinut. I think you'd do well on Yahoo just as you've done well on this site.

Thank you Connie, but it is a time issue. The In His Grip Ministries is my first priority now. I will think about the republishing angle.

Thanks Connie. I started off in Associated Content which was bought over by Yahoo Contributor Network and later renamed Yahoo Voices. I had written 400 articles over two years and I enjoyed good camaraderie like here. But over time I felt discouraged as non-US residents don't get paid! My articles get good page views even now though I am not active there, and I should have earned $100 but I am ineligible to get paid. Here we are in the same boat - siva

Good article. I'm registered over there, too, but the articles I submitted for up-front payments were rejected, and so I decided to commit my limited time elsewhere. Missing from your article, though -- does it pay better than Wikinut does -- since you mentioned getting far less traffic -- or is it about the same?

For me , time is the issue as well Connie . I submit my poems on a poetry poem site , but that and Wikinut are sufficient for me . I have had 68000 hits on PP , but it is not a paying site ...That doesn't bother me though , as I have met lovely people there as I have here , and there I can view every one of my poems at a glance which I like ...
God bless you my friend , and may 2014 be a very successful one for you and yours .

Thanks, Siva, Stella and Phyl.
Yahoo pays better than a lot of sites because it does offer some upfront payments. That's one of the reasons why I like it.
Now, if I could just figure out how to get more traffic there, I'd do better.

Good morning, Connie; I appreciate the update. You had mentioned that you were writing for Yahoo before. Time, resources, and allocation of them are probably why I haven't written any yet. Since I do not make resolutions, I will make an effort to write something, or at least use some of the Wikinut articles and see how it goes. I appreciate a reminder of opportunities. ~Marilyn

Thanks, Marilyn and Carolina. There is still a waiting period but it's much shorter when you re-publish material on Yahoo Voices. So that can help with the time issue, which I certainly understand.

Hello Connie. Your article is very helpful for me as I am still in the process of taking the academy courses. I'm finishing up on Level 3 and am eager to start on the electives. The thought of having a submission rejected was a scary thought for me, so I truly appreciate the way that you explained that particular issue. Thanks a bunch! Mamawoodley
