Writing an article for search engines: Tips for new writers

Writing juicy stuff for readers ensures that your article will have good readership. New writers need to know how and why they must use keywords. This is only for newbie writers. One must also provide enough material on the topic.

In the beginning is consistency

Consistency is a virtue – an article must not run nor must it be too thick. One must be able to understand what has been written without having to strain the brain. When you are eating chocolate cake you do not want to break in the middle to climb a tree or go for a swim. If you have opened one topic say paring apples, then you have to go through to the end giving readers an insight into holding the apple while paring and using the proper knife in the proper manner. It does not matter here whether the apple is red, green or yellow – we are only considering the physical aspect, namely paring.

Make it crisp

Readers do not want to plod through endless miles of type to get to the point. Clarity is a beacon for those struggling in the seas of muddy repetitiveness and thought lines without any order. The most popular device is the bullet list. Here is the idea presented below – check whether there is anything wrong.
1) Flour – ½ cup
2) Eggs beaten – 2 numbers
3) Vanilla essence for flavor
4) Sugar – ½ cup
5) Butter – 200 g
Content wise there is nothing wrong. Everything that we use for baking a cake is present. However, you would have noticed that the flavoring essence comes high up in the list. There is no priority given for important ingredients.

Write something new and write daily

Freshness is highly sought after since almost everyone on our dear planet earth writes. They have something to tell and mostly it is what you want to tell – undoubtedly you both read the same paper today. Search engines will ignore things you wrote yesterday or the day before that.

Search criterion is important

Crawlers used by top search engines such as Yahoo, Bing, Ask and Google follow an algorithm that helps it rank websites from top (fulfilling all search criteria) to lowest (very less relation to search criteria) and this will come up in the result page when you type in your search query. For example, you want to know more about blue shoes you type in BLUE SHOES TYPES. The search engine will return all search results for different types of blue shoes. Now if you want to know manufacturers of blue shoes, you would type in BLUE SHOES MANUFACTURERS. Now you will have a list of all blue shoe makers.

Relation of keywords to search conducted

Search engines will scan your article and pick out the keywords. This will be ‘blue shoe manufacturer’ and unless you mention this your page will now be ranked lower by the search engines. Similarly, you have to do a small research on related keywords such as ‘uppers’, ‘soles’, ‘inner’ and all things related to shoes. If you miss out the shoelaces, they all the sites that have mentioned shoelaces will be ranked above you. Just try it.

Search methodology

Reason for this kind of ranking is simple to see. When you walk into a shop you might have any number of requirements. You might be looking for shoes, you could be shopping for a pair of socks, and you might need uppers (though they do not sell them separately – I mention it just so that we get a better idea). However, you are not looking for sunglasses or hairspray. So, the shoe shop will stock up things related to shoes alone.

Article relevancy to topic

In the article too, we have ideas related one particular topic alone. If you have begin your article as “Fishing in the deep blue sea” you are not going to be talking about high fashion or cake baking. You will deal with harpoons, fishing tackles, fishing nets and lures, fishing boats and probably fishermen (on whose boat you are writing this article). When you deviate too much from the topic of the article, the crawler bots of the search engines will “lose interest”. The article or blog is too watered down to interest them. So, instead of getting 300 – 350 visitors per day you will only have 10 – 30 visitors.

Provide enough to readers

Last thing probably (some people consider it the first) is quantity. Nobody is going to stop to read two lines about ticking clocks in Times Square. They are big, they are black and they tell time. No, I do not want to know. If you could tell some spicy details like Times Square originally was called Longacre Square, and that it is the center of the entertainment industry it would evoke some interest whether there were ticking clocks around or not. Put in lots of facts, readers love to know new things and avoid repetitious phrases like “you know” “By the way” or “As a matter of fact”.

Reeaaally Mr Siva, we cannot blame the butterflies in our purse to a failing monsoon. The intrepid writer likewise will soon set things right, whether you like it or not.

#2 in the recipe is eggs -- 2 numbers.
Well, you asked if anything was wrong, and I'm no expert, but I think something was wrong with that line.

Liked the overall concept though.
