You Rock, Val Mills!

This is my homage to Val Mills, who reminded me on her recent star page to get my backside into gear and sign up for the National Novel Writing Month.
She also set my brain working on a bright idea for an Alice in Wonderland 'about writing' article that's received rave reviews from my publisher.
You rock, Val Mills!

National Novel Writing Month

In 2010, they had over 200,000 participants. More than 30,000 of them crossed the 50K finish line by the midnight deadline, entering into the annals of NaNoWriMo superstardom forever. They started the month as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists.
http://www.nanowrimo.org/whatisnano

My good Wikinut friend, Val Mills, posted a star page recently, that reminded Wikinutters about the National November Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short).
I'd been toying with the idea of signing up with NaNoWriMo for weeks and weeks.

"Shall I do it?" "Shall I not?"

Oh, I was in a quandry!

Then I read Val's article, wrote her a comment, um'd and ah'd a little bit more - and then I decided - YES!

"It's about time I got up off my backside and got this novel going," I said.

So I've signed up!

It costs not a penny - and it's a great motivator.

It starts on November 1st (tomorrow - oh, my!) and ends on November 30th.

"Make no mistake," says NaNoWriMo, "You will be writing a lot of crap. And that’s a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down."

Wish me luck, Wikinutters. And I wish my great friend and motivator, Val Mills, all the luck in the world with her NaNoWriMo project too.

A Tale of Alice in Wonderland

I'm indebted yet again to my friend Val Mills for giving me an 'Alice in Wonderland' idea for an 'about writing' article. I read one of her earlier 'about writing' articles where she refers Alice and the Cheshire Cat.

Suddenly, an idea came to me.

I could write a whole article about writing, based on the brilliant Lewis Carrol's Alices' Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass

So I asked Val if she would have any objections - but she was gracious and gave me her blessing.

Thanks Val, because I wrote a 1500 word article, entitled 'A Wonderland of Wise Words' and it's to be published on Flash Fiction Chronicles SOON!

I'm already a two-time contributor to Flash Fiction Chronicles, with:

Waltzing with the Word
http://www.everydayfiction.com/flashfictionblog/tag/sheila-newton

and:

Adverb: Amigo or Adversary
http://www.everydayfiction.com/flashfictionblog/adverb-amigo-or-adversary-2/#comments

So, with my 'third-time-lucky-again' article for Flash Fiction Chronicles -
Thanks again, Val. You're my HERO!

Not Goodbye - just Au Revoir!

While my head is down, writing this novel, under the guidance of NaNoWriMo, I may not be such an avid commenter on Wikinut.

I'll try and post one or two pages along the way - but I can't even promise that.

It doesn't mean that I'll have forgotten about you Wikinutters: it just means I'll be getting writer's cramp, getting my Young Adult novel, 'Lavender Cat' drafted, done and dusted.

In the words of NaNoWriMo:

"As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and—when the thing is done—the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children."

I'll try to stay in touch - but if I don't, I'll be thinking about you all now and then. I hope you'll think about me too - grafting away for a whole month in my writing den, my rubber plant and my cats watching over me!

Creative Writing Rocks! Val Mills Rocks!

I'll be back on song in December, folks - I promise!

I love your expressions and the way you let this out. Why not check out my story and tell me what you think. It was a 5 minutes inspiration I wrote down and I am scared it may not be as great as I thought.

Hi Sheila Newton,

You rock too, and Val Mills advice is encouraging.
I've just saw what's in store at nanowrimo and also browsed through your Waltzing with the Word page.

NaNoWriMo is a great inspiration to the creative machines who can produce at least 1670 words a day.

Wish you the best.

We only started NaNoWriMo on 1ts November. Not too late to make a start - even if you don't make the full 50000 words. Or try to get a full chapter by chapter synopsis ready for next year. That's where the hard work is - the whole idea around your neovel, including every single conflict. Good luck if you give it a go.

HI Sheila, I read your comment at my page and I've been reading here also. I think you are jittery because you are happy thinking how your novel will go. If you get writier's block, (you know I penned about that in one of my poems), I would be glad to ease yourself out of it if you but ask me. Maybe I can help you along the way. (I won't want to take any credit, only that it helped you thru smooth sailing in your writing adventure.) Good ~ happy ~ writing until! (Yes, we'll all miss you)!
