You have to get into shape to travel to China!!!

A true story about my experience travelling through China their facilities.

The Facilities

I learned that it is a good idea to do some squats and ready those hamstrings for the experience of an Eastern toilet. It takes some balancing to hold the position and any peripheral things like cameras, clothing etc. Most of the time there was no place to support yourself with your hands and most of the time; you wouldn’t want to touch the walls or doors anyhow. It is also an absolute must to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The facilities no matter how nice do not supply paper towels, toilet paper nor soap. It is also a good idea to bring along extra Kleenex, unless you are wearing jeans which make a great place to dry your hands.
Most of the tourist facilities had a couple of western toilets. It was funny to see all the Westerners lining up to use those. They still didn’t have toilet paper, paper towels or soap but it was a lot easier for us to use.

The lack of amenities

The people on the trip were mainly accountants and I believe that I was the youngest. Everyone was very nice. We were sharing our hand sanitizer, Kleenex and non prescription drugs. Most of us carried with us a zip lock bag full of hand sanitizer, anti diarrhea meds such as Imodium, cold and sinus meds, allergy meds such a Benadryl, Gravol, Polysporin antiseptic, Kleenex and of course an assortment of bandages. Pepto Bismol went throughout the group, many times… I was a Godsend!
We were advised that you never, ever drink tea and eat grapes at the same time. Professor Chen who escorted us on the trip made the mistake and although he is Chinese born he felt the truth of this the next day.
We were also advised to eat only fruit that could be pealed and stay away from dairy. It was quite the adventure. I myself missed out on two outings due to an unsettled stomach.
It was an amazing adventure, well worth the added precautions.

You can eat grapes and tea, just put the grapes in the hot tea.....

This is similar to traveling to other countries. The germs there you are not used to and will get Montezuma's revenge which makes you sick to your stomach. Even some ice cubes are not safe.
