black widow smile

A poem about getting caught up in the struggle to believe in your head what you know is a lie in your heart.

black widow smile

during the day
I bounce around this town
a lost circus clown
looking for the big top
after the sun goes down
I stagger around
an inebriated astronaut
who survived a fiery crash to the ground
I am a danger to no one but myself
longing to happen to someone
or for someone to happen to me
I finally let you go
refusing to love someone
with my eyes closed
or while they had one foot
always out the door
I cannot sleep through the night
I wake
it is dark outside
it is dark in my room
I do not want to look
at the glowing numbers of the clock
on the bedside table
but after lying awake
for what feels like an eternity
I finally do
it’s a half hour after two in the a.m.
as I lie on my back
trying to empty my head
only to see my thoughts
dancing around the bed
with drums and rattles
whistles and bells
they like to remind me
of how I gave too much
let you drain me
a beautiful succubus
it took too long to see
you were not what I wanted
you are not what I need
I drug my feet
I tried to fool myself
caught in a web of lies
but it only worked for a little while
by your diamondback eyes
by your black widow smile
