by the shore

A poem about being in love with someone who has a lot of baggage.

by the shore

it was the day the sun
washed up on the shore
I watched you
as you stood there
with the wind in your hair
and the waves slowly washing in
again and again and again
I thought about what you said
about how maybe you never told
me the truth about why you ran
away from home
or what you were running away from
you stood there
wrapped in a blanket
with your bare feet in the sand
a strange sadness in your eyes
mirrored by the warm sunrise
the gulls circling overhead
funny feathered cherubs
in the salty wind
calling for your attention
and me
overwhelmed by you
in that moment
I did not want to bother you
I did not want to go near
I only wanted to gaze at you
from afar
and think about all the possibilities
of us
