early morning mist

A poem about waking up early because you couldn't sleep. Most people I know never have that problem.

early morning mist

it is early
too early
I should still be asleep
snuggled up in my warm
king sized bed
but I could not sleep
so I got out of bed
made coffee
I hold a steaming mug
in my hand
the mug features a picture of Opus
from the Bloom County comic strip
from my kitchen window
I gaze at the early morning mist
hanging low in the fields
drifting among the homes
fences
and trees
across the cracks in the sidewalks
over the driveways
and down the rough streets
the mist
is a ghost
a wraith
floating
moving
flowing
searching
even as it slowly dissipates
fading
achingly
as the sun
starts to light up the horizon
the sky turns burnt orange
and a deep indigo blue
I sip my coffee
and think about the things
I need to do
