fish tacos

A poem about a typical lunch on a weekday. It was one of those days were I was feeling a bit out of sorts and all I needed was a simple but good meal.

fish tacos

at a small round table
in a local restaurant
called Smitty’s Garage
known for its hamburgers
I enjoy two fish tacos
and a lemonade
looking outside
I can see the parking lot
of a large supermarket
I watch as people come and go
pushing shopping carts
with sacks
filled with groceries
I watch as they load them in their cars
and drive away
back to their homes
back into their lives
on a large flat screen television
mounted to the wall
a sport’s channel is showing
highlights from different games
all I can think about is how
I do not want to go back to work
I want to go home
but that’s not going to happen
I feel tired
but restless at the same time
the lemonade is sweet
and tart at the same time
the fish tacos are good
and as I eat them
I begin to feel better
more grounded
I take a bite
taste the different flavors
and contrasting textures
between the slightly crisp
deep fried beer battered cod
the soft flour tortilla
and the cabbage slaw
with its slight crunch
a little spicy and semi-sweet
with a mild sour acidic undertone
I finish the tacos
take another drink of lemonade
and head out the door
where the day is sunny and warm
it finally feels as though summer
is really here
