This poem describes the feeling that you missed out on the greatest love of your life.

looking for miss goodbar

I still look for you
when I’m out and about
whether I am buying groceries
shopping for new slacks
or a shirt
running errands
at the movies
or the ballet
sitting at a traffic light
I have this tendency
not a habit exactly
but a tendency
to look around for you
I know I probably shouldn’t
but I do
it feels as though it is ingrained in me
the worst part of it is
after all these years
I do not think I would recognize you
even if I did see you
our eyes might meet
just for a moment
a second
at most
but then they would move on
you would be just another face in the crowd
a stranger
I’m not sure what I am expecting
no way it could be like it was before
it just doesn’t happen twice
the truth is
since then
I have felt only half alive
I have felt incomplete
as though
I am missing a part of me
I let you slip through my fingers
what excuse do I have
what excuse to help me feel better
I didn’t realize what I had
that’s what I tell myself
I’m too old to be this foolish now
I’ve seen too much
experienced too much
too many dreams destroyed
too much disappointment
that’s how life works
it’s not a romance novel
is there really such a thing
as happily ever after
if I ever see you again
maybe you will have the answer
