A poem about a typical night spent with my girlfriend and her little white dog, Ellie.

the beast

it's 3 a.m.
I'm in bed
my girlfriend's little white dog
all six pounds of her
crawls on top of my chest
and licks my face
to wake me
she needs to go outside
I pick her up
get out of the warm bed
my girlfriend stirs
waking just long enough
to ask me where I'm going
I tell her
"the beast"
needs to go out
that's my nickname for her little dog
"the beast"
with her sparkly pink collar
that has a bow on top
I carry the beast to the living room
turn the alarm system off
it would wake the whole neighborhood
I carry the beast to the backdoor
walk outside
where it is cool
and slightly windy
I set the beast down on the patio
she looks around
shakes herself off
then cautiously
walks out onto the lawn
the stars are out
the moon too
a bright white balloon
in the clear night sky
somewhere off in the distance
I hear coyotes
calling to one another
it feels strange
to be standing out here
so early in the morning
no one around
the only sounds
the wind
tugging at my shirt
like a sentient thing
the coyotes
it almost feels as though
I am the only one alive
in all the world
just me
and this little white dog
sniffing around in the grass
trying to find just the right spot
to urinate
