the sinking ship

This is a poem about being young and listening to your parents fight in the next room.

the sinking ship

buried under an avalanche of words
nouns
verbs
adjectives
some of which hurt
blue and red tide cannot wash it all away
loud voices from the next room
startle the birds from the branches
the stars from the sky
the heart from my chest
it is over
but they don't know it
or want to acknowledge it
not yet
not until the ship is almost underwater
the water swirling around their knees
all the passengers in lifeboats
watching from a safe distance
not until the resentment turns to anger
the anger turns to hate
not until they have hurt one another
beyond healing
or repair
the only ones left on the boat are a few
crew members
too young to understand
and too used to it to give a damn
