A poem about noticing the little things and not letting the bigger things get to you.

tuna salad sandwich

I don't know why I'm bothering to write this
it won't change anything
tomorrow it will be the same
I will get up
fight rush hour traffic into work
stay pissed off for most of the day
then fight rush hour traffic to get home
when I get home I will cook dinner
clean the kitchen
maybe do some laundry
watch some TV
go to bed
the next day it will start all over again
the only thing I can see at the end of this road
is the inside of a dark casket sitting at the bottom
of an even darker hole in the ground
but then I start to notice the little things
like today
the bright pink flowers growing near that white
church with the tall steeple
some song on the radio that makes me feel good
for no particular reason
the sight of that couple walking in the park hand in
all those kids playing on the slide and the monkey
it's always the little things
not so much the miracles
but the seemingly ordinary mundane things that are
occurring right around me that most people may not
really pay that much attention to
those are the things that make the journey a little
more tolerable
a little more worth while
and that tuna salad sandwich I had for lunch today
that was pretty damn good too
