~ Letters from the Monastery of My Heart: XXV: ~

~ Traveling Wester ~

The man who stabbed me didn’t mean to kill me. He just wanted me to stop fighting back, defending myself from the onslaught of his fists. There was regret in his eyes but the deed was done.

Three pennies on the floor made me change my mind. I bent over to pick them up and a bullet ripped through the room. Through the window curtain lace, I saw three pregnant women, an exorcist, an abortionist, and a dead fish.

There’s a woman in the room. She laughs at the dead issue on her legs, in her mouth, says, “I don’t do that anymore,” to the man she intends to marry. He’s a sad man; he’s a bad man, wishes she’d just get on with it.

They’re cutting my son in half Wednesday and fusing his spine, welding it to his pelvis. It would be my gift to him to stand forfeit my life in exchange for this ordeal, father blind and frozen white.

There’s a tear on the floor. Where’s it from, I wonder, bent over and sitting, face resting in my hands. I’m a man and mustn’t weep. Who put it there then, that tear on the floor?

My spirit left my body over a thousand miles ago. It stayed with her in that far place I only meant to visit. Will she keep it safe, will she? My spirit left my body. I wonder if she knows.
