~Snow Angels~

I’ve enjoyed two positive constants across the years of my life, writing and children. My daughter, Harley Blue, was born January 9th. On that date a few years ago she brought her sons, Jesse - 4 and Eli - 2, to visit me and have birthday pizza. Zedidiah, my youngest son who was 16 at the time, came home from school for lunch and joined us.

As soon as they arrived, Jesse asked, “Papa, do you still have that back yard?” Soon we were back there and Zedidiah was jumping with his nephews on the trampoline. Two years before my children gifted me a digital camera for Christmas and I was finally getting comfortable with it. Tommy, my oldest son has been very patient with me, teaching me how to work with photography software programs.

I got those boys down in the snow doing angels. Zedidiah created the one pictured here. He had to bounce his arms because the snow was crusted. I liked the effect and put the photo together with the piece I wrote, ‘Snow Angels.’ Combining that ‘real snow angel’ with the words reminds me of the joy I first felt when I sat down at the keyboard and charted the chords to ‘Farewell Captain Charlie,’ a song I could perform without the band. I have to resist the temptation to go back now and give the thousands of pieces from the past visuals that I have always held in back of my mind. Life is truly a song to sing, art and words the path between.

This is the piece:

I have learned to believe in simple miracles which makes the more difficult easier to swallow. When I caught the first snowflake and it melted on my tongue, we were one. I became a gush of winter. The children thought I was a snowman but no, I was just a man in the snow. “Let’s build one then!” They are wonderful and complex in their simplicity, children. One wonders at their rosy cheeks and warm noses, indifferent to the discomfort of the weather at the prospect of creating Snow People.

“Wait first,” I tell them, “We must seek a blessing of Snow Angels.” I have plenty of time these days for slow memories as I kneel down in the deep fluff and flop over on my back. There are a host of oohs and aahs as I flap my arms and legs to create gown and wings. Small hands help me up and soon, indifferent to discomfort, I witness a fluttering of real angels, playing in the stuff of Gods.
