~to wit~to it~tuit~twit~

I have been writing for over fifty years, stories in elementary school, painful dirges of love in my teens, howling whiskey laments in my rock & roll days, songs, novels, prayers. A couple of years ago I began to write to images, real ones, not those in my night mind. This led me to photography which brought me back to those thousand words to describe what an image so obviously conveys.

I created a hundred and some pieces, with the intent to assemble a word/picture book for family & friends. While nowhere near professional, hardly aware what I’m doing if my sons aren’t near to direct me, I have become much better at aiming & collecting images. Having spent some time with my youngest son, I’m vaguely aware of the mega-pixel thing, how to increase or diminish it in the photo-shop application I received as a gift from my children a couple of Christmases ago.

Following are a few pieces from that collection. When you view this type of work, would you rather see the text separate or worked into the image? The word man in me had it all figured out but the guy who sniffs flowers & rubs his back on trees is telling me to present them together apart. I’m confused & I like it like that, never quite sure what’s gonna happen next.

Writers will notice I’ve tried to remove the “me” from these as I put this together, engaging in that hundredth edit, the one you promise yourself you’re not gonna do because, damn it, at some point the thing just has to be done. It’s sure as hell easier to edit than it is to redo text in images.

~Meditation One: Night~

~as day moves toward evening~
~there is a deepening~
~when long shadows prevail~
~restless spirits ready themselves~
~for the peace of night~
~the howl~

~Meditation Two: Gods’ Hands~

~you’ve painted the ceiling again~
~while our eyes were closed~
~when they open~
~your brushes~
~have created wonder beyond~

~what hands make~
~minds imagine~

~Meditation Three: Distance~

~contemplating distance~
~earth & sky~
~heart & spirit~
~love at the end~
~kisses blown~
~carried on your wind~
~so great~
~human insignificance~

~Meditation 4: Walking Bridge~

~the walking bridge of life~
~spans our reach of spirit~
~invites us to goodness~
~provides sanctuary~
~a positive & productive~
~path & way~

~to avoid the abyss~

~Meditation 5: Dusk~

~night come welcome~
~in the golden dusk~
~standing between~
~earth & sky~
~spirit full~
~end of day~
